Canon PG-210 and PG-245 Low Ink Warnings: Understanding Ink Monitoring After a Refill

Refilling an ink cartridge can extend its useful life and reduce the number of cartridges that are discarded. However, a refilled Canon cartridge may behave differently from a new cartridge when the printer checks its estimated ink level.

One common example is a low-ink warning that remains visible even though the cartridge still contains usable ink. Understanding why this happens can help printer users distinguish between an ink-monitoring message and an actual print-quality problem.

For cartridges such as the Canon PG-210 and PG-245 families, this distinction is especially relevant when a cartridge is being reused rather than replaced.

How Ink Is Stored Inside a Canon Cartridge

The Canon cartridges demonstrated in the video store ink in an internal sponge. The sponge holds the ink and supplies it during printing.

For the printing test shown in the demonstration, the cartridge had previously been refilled and its internal sponge capacity had been increased. The test began with 10 milliliters of black ink and 5 milliliters in each color section.

The purpose of the demonstration was to observe how the cartridge behaved over an extended printing period and how the printer’s ink-level monitoring responded as printing continued.

From a reuse perspective, this illustrates an important distinction: the physical amount of ink inside a cartridge and the amount reported by the printer do not necessarily remain synchronized after refilling.

Why a Refilled Canon Cartridge Can Show Low Ink

During the demonstration, the printer displayed a steady yellow cartridge light even though usable ink remained in the cartridge.

The important point is that the warning did not necessarily indicate that the cartridge was physically empty.

The printer’s ink gauge was not accurately representing the remaining ink in the refilled cartridge. Because the cartridge had been refilled, the printer continued to interpret its recorded ink status according to its monitoring system rather than directly recognizing the newly added ink.

As a result, a low-ink indication can appear while printing can still continue normally.

This is useful information for anyone evaluating a refilled Canon PG-210 or PG-245 cartridge. An ink-level warning and an actual loss of usable ink are related issues, but they are not always the same thing.

What the Yellow Cartridge Light Means


Two different warning behaviors appeared during the printing test.

At first, the cartridge LED remained steadily yellow. In the demonstration, this corresponded with the printer believing that the ink level was low.

Later, the yellow lights began flashing and a message appeared on the printer. At that stage, the printer provided its own instruction for continuing printing without normal ink-level monitoring.

After that condition was acknowledged, the yellow warning lights continued flashing because the printer was no longer maintaining the usual ink-level indication for the refilled cartridge.

The practical lesson is that warning-light behavior can change as a refilled cartridge passes through different stages of the printer’s ink-monitoring system.

Ink Monitoring Is Different From Print Quality

The demonstration also showed why users should evaluate the printed page rather than relying only on an electronic ink estimate.

Printing continued for many pages while the printer displayed an ink warning. Eventually, the black portion of the printed output began to fade while the color output remained acceptable.

That visible fading provided a separate indication that the black ink supply was becoming insufficient.

After the black cartridge received additional ink, normal print quality returned.

This comparison highlights two different types of information:

The printer’s ink monitor provides an electronic estimate or status warning.

The printed page provides visible evidence of how ink is currently reaching the paper.

After a cartridge has been refilled, these two indicators may not change at the same time.

Paper Feeding Can Create a Different Printing Problem

The demonstration also identified a separate issue that can sometimes be mistaken for a cartridge problem.

A printer may produce only part of a page and then restart when paper is not being guided correctly. In the example shown, the paper guide was positioned too widely, allowing the paper to feed improperly.

This is separate from the cartridge’s low-ink warning.

Recognizing the difference between an ink-monitoring issue and a paper-feeding issue can help users better understand what the printer is communicating before deciding whether a cartridge has reached the end of its useful life.

Refilled Cartridges and Continued Monitoring

Once normal ink monitoring is no longer available, the printer may not provide the same automatic indication of remaining ink that it provided with the original cartridge state.

This makes observation of print quality more important.

The demonstration showed black output becoming visibly faded while color remained present. That difference provided meaningful information about which ink supply was being depleted even though the electronic ink gauge was no longer providing a conventional reading.

This is an important consideration when reusing Canon cartridges: disabling or losing normal ink-level monitoring does not create an unlimited ink supply. The cartridge still needs sufficient ink for consistent printing.

Cartridge Reuse and Waste Reduction

Refilling a cartridge provides an opportunity to continue using a component that might otherwise be discarded after its original ink supply is consumed.

The demonstration also raises a broader question about cartridge lifespan. Beyond measuring pages from a single refill, it is useful to consider how many refill cycles a cartridge can withstand while continuing to produce acceptable output.

Extending the functional life of printer cartridges supports the Reduce Refill Recycle mission by encouraging greater understanding of reusable printer components and reducing unnecessary disposal.

Learning how ink warnings behave after a refill can help users make decisions based on the cartridge’s actual printing condition rather than assuming every low-ink indication means immediate disposal is necessary.
